Celebrate the Caribbean

Saturday, August 6

Join us in celebrating Caribbean history and cultures! Get ready for a day of dance, games, live music, stilt walkers, art-making, face painting, steel drum performances, and delicious food and nibbles.

Featuring performances and workshops by CarNYval Dancers, Sesame Flyers, and Harmony Music Makers, and presented in partnership with our friends from the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).

10:00 am–1:00 pm

Sounds of Steelpan with Harmony Music Makers

Steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago. Join the pannists of Harmony Music Makers as they give an introduction to the significance of steelpan in Caribbean culture and teach the basics of playing the instrument. Families taking part in the workshop will be coached to play a single song that everyone will perform together at the end of the lesson!

Afro-Caribbean Dance with CarNYval Dancers

See the moves of the Afro-Caribbean CarNYval Dancers dance group, then join in and learn a few dance moves yourself!

10:30 am–1:00 pm

Get Ready for Carnival! (ColorLab Art Studio)

Join us in our 2nd floor ColorLab Art Studio to craft a Carnival creation like a beaded neck piece or a feathered headdress! This workshop is led by WIADCA, the West Indian American Day Carnival Association.

11:00 am–11:45 am

Flying High with the Sesame Flyers

See the colorful costumes of the award-winning Sesame Flyers International! A live DJ and Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers) will lead dance performances and limbo. Sesame Flyers is a Brooklyn-based organization dedicated to providing a range of youth development, cultural programs, social welfare and supportive services to individuals and families in Brooklyn.

Stars of the Sea

Discover underwater critters from oceans around the world. The Caribbean sea star will brighten your day!

Cuisine of the Caribbean

Journey through the many cuisines of the Caribbean at this live storytelling program led by Wendy Regisford of Auntie Wendy’s Catering.

12:15 pm–1:00 pm

Dance Party!

One day, five boroughs — get ready for Dance Party NYC, a joyous citywide festival of music and movement! Join BCM’s own dance party, taking place during Celebrate the Caribbean and led by the CarNYval Dancers.
