Join BCM during spring break for a week-long celebration of our amazing planet! Each day presents exciting STEAM-inspired programs consisting of dynamic performances, hands-on workshops, and special projects in BCM’s new makerspace, Nature’s Engineers. The week is organized around four overarching themesGrowSustainCare, and Explore.

Today’s theme is Grow: Soil, Plants, and Food. Plants make up over 80% of Earth’s biomass – discover how we can use and care for them!

Schedule

Animal Veterinary

🕒 10:30 am–12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm–4:30 pm

Learn how to use tools such as a stethoscope, otoscope, and thermometer to perform a check-up on a fuzzy animal friend at our animal care station.

Plant Dye Textiles

🕒 10:45 am–11:15 am, 11:30 am–12:00 pm, 2:45 pm–3:15 pm, and 3:30 pm–4:00 pm

Explore the different ways we can use plants to make art with textile designer, artist, and educator Nelise Charles. Participants will get to learn how to bundle dye with natural materials like hibiscus, marigolds, onion skins and more.

Pachamama Musical Performance

🕒 11:15 am–12:00 pm, and 3:15 pm–4:00 pm

Flor Bromley will be performing selections from her album “Pachamama,” a bilingual (English and Spanish) collection of songs inspired by Mother Earth. It’s a perfect tool for teaching children about taking care of nature and learning about how nature takes care of us.

Food Demo: Earth Day Smoothie

🕒 12:00 pm–12:45 pm, and 2:00 pm–2:30 pm

Join Danielle Medina aka Fit N Play Mama, for an introduction to the wonderful world of plant-based foods, their superpower nutrient properties and how we can create delicious recipes. Enjoy the taste of the Earth with this smoothie demonstration.

Earth Guardians in ColorLab Art Studio

🕒 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Half-hour long sessions, starting every 45 minutes.

Visit the ColorLab Art Studio and create your own Earth guardian creatures inspired by Wangechi Mutu’s sentinels. Participants will use natural materials like wood, clay, sticks, leaves and twine.

Plant Dyes in Nature’s Engineers Makerspace

🕒 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Half-hour long sessions, starting every 45 minutes.

Learn about plants and the colors that they produce! Test different plant-based pigments to create your own unique colors.
