We are thrilled to partner again with Jai Jai Hooray by Umani to bring you a day of color, culture and play. “Holi” is the South Asian and West Indian color festival and we’ve put a Brooklyn spin on it. Join us for dance, art, story, food and color powder play!
The Story of Holi
11:00-11:45 | 2nd floor Visiting Exhibit Gallery
So why is color powder thrown on Holi? Jai Jai Hooray modernizes an ancient myth to explain why. Famed Hindu characters, Radha and Krishna, are reimagined as kids on a Brooklyn playground who use color to counter bullying; brought to life by Ajna Dance. Raga Kids sets the mood with an intro to sitar, tabla and violin.
ColorLab Art Studio
11:00-3:00 | ColorLab
East meets West! Inspired by traditional South Asian Holi color play and African American artist Sam Gilliam, BCM’s art educators invite visitors to create their own colorfield canvases and add a paper blossom to our massive flower-filled meadow.
Feast and Shop at the Bazaar
11:00-3:00 | Museum Café and Rooftop Terrace
Enjoy savory delights from legendary Indian restaurateurs The Kati Roll Company, Kurry Qulture, The Brower Cafe, Malai Ice Cream and Kolkata Chai Co. Shop Jai Jai Hooray toys + color powder, Masala Baby kids clothing, Bharat Babies children’s books, Niwa Jewels and the Colourism Project.
Bollywood and Bhangra Dance Classes
12:00, 12:45 & 1:30 | 2nd floor Visiting Exhibit Gallery

For the Love of Henna
12:00-3:00 | 2nd floor Visiting Exhibit Gallery
Shillz Mirza and Aurora Fenix apply henna to little hands as a courtesy (tips appreciated!) Mirza also spent the week creating a henna-fied mural on our gallery wall. We want your help finishing it, so come grab a piece of chalk and add some color!
Party Time: Holi Drum and Dance Show
2:30 | 2nd floor Visiting Exhibit Gallery
Get ready for revelry with a gorgeous, upbeat dance performance by Ajna Dance accompanied by Dholi Om’s drum beats. A procession will lead us to the park for color play.
Outdoor Color Powder Play!
3:00-4:00 | Brower Skate Park – St. Marks Entrance next to the Museum
It wouldn’t be Holi without color powder play! Powder will be sold from 11am-2:30pm inside the Museum and then distributed outside at pick-up stations. More powder for sale outside. NOTE: Holi Hooray color powder is cornstarch based, non toxic, washable and kid safe. Don’t miss out!
