Sessions are taught by professional Teaching Artists.

Wednesdays

Storytime & Sensory Lounge
Wednesday, 9:30-10:30am
Ages 12 to 36 months

Children and caregivers explore their senses in this interactive class that includes song, storytelling, dramatic role play, objects from the museums touchable collection, and exploration of sensory materials.

Animal adventures!
Wednesday, 10:45-11:45AM
Ages 24 to 36 months

Slither and crawl your way through this interactive class where kids discover their animal bodies through creative movement and improvisation. Each week will highlight different animals through stories, song, and the opportunity to meet live animals from the Museum’s collection.

Little Artists Afternoons
Wednesday, 3:30PM-4:30pm
Ages 3 to 5 years

Each week children and caregivers are introduced to a new artist, explore their technique and materials, and create their own masterworks in this one-hour class in Spark’s art studio.

Thursdays

Lavender Blues Music & Movement
Thursday, 9:30-10:30am
ages 12-36 months

Teaching musician Lavender Blues explores music, movement and rhythm with children ages 1-3 years in this engaging jam session. During this class kids develop an understanding of rhythm and music, build awareness and control of their body as well as develop social and coordination skills.

Meet the Teaching Artists

Erika Garcy Tobin

Erika is an artist with a passion for teaching through the visual arts. She completed her MA in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and taught art for 2 years at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York. Based on a philosophy that celebrates process over product, Erika supports a child’s instinctive desire to create, develop ideas, and make meaningful connections through art making. Erika is Spark’s Studio Manager and oversees classes, creative program development, and operations.

siri hellerman

Siri is a Brooklyn based actor, improviser, voice over artist and teacher. Before moving to New York, she toured extensively with the National Theatre for Children and Youth Performance Company performing in a variety of educational shows about electricity, water conservation, and bullying. As well as being a Museum Educator at BCM, Siri teaches creative movement, song and dance, dramatic play and improv with ChildsPlayNY. She is also is the voice of Millie the Monkey for the educational iPad app “Learn With Homer”. She holds an MFA in Acting from the New School for Drama.

Alexandra Louis-Jacques,
Lavender Blues

Alexandra Louis-Jacques has been a caregiver, educator, and entertainer of children for 15 years in London, England and Brooklyn, NY, where she now calls home. In 2012, she founded Lavender Blues, a music and movement class for toddlers and their caregivers. Her classes combine a love of music and rhythm and the knowledge and inspiration she gained from years of working as a nanny to create positive, education-based bonding experiences between children and adults. Alex lives and teaches by the philosophy of live, love, laugh!

Tuition for SPARK registered classes must be paid in advance and is non refundable. Registration is available until class capacity is reached; registration after the session has begun will be prorated. Fall classes will run consecutively from October 5th - December 15, with a week break for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no classes on November 23, 24, or 25.
