Celebrate the Caribbean Festival!

Join us for the our weekend-long Celebrate the Caribbean festival. We will celebrate the cultures of the Caribbean islands through performance, celebration, and art.

Saturday, July 22nd

Totally Tots Studio – Caribbean Carnival Collages
10:00am to 12:00pm | Ages 2.5 – 5

Stamp your hands in paint and create beautiful motifs that will last a lifetime. Learn about Bahamian artist Lavar Munroe’s techniques, materials, and ideas, then channel your inner artist through art-making. Activities invite young artists to build and refine their fine motor skills; engage in sensory exploration of materials; and, learn how to share with others in this open art studio. There is no such thing as a bad mess in this space, which is tailored to children five and younger.

 

Play with Your Food: Jamaican Punch Station
11:00am to 11:45am | Ages 3+

Learn the botanic origins and taste the flavors of ingredients and spices used to make Jamaican fruit punch. Kids and their families participate in the making as well as the tasting!

 

Crown Creations with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association
1:00pm to 3:00pm | Ages 3+

Head over to our World Brooklyn exhibit and stop by the Caribbean Travel Agency storefront to create festive crowns for carnival.

 

Sylvia’s Story Corner: Caribbean Tales
1:30pm to 2:00pm, 3:00pm to 3:30pm | All ages

Join a BCM Educator and learn about Caribbean culture and the importance of Carnival, a festival full of dance, costumes and music celebrating Caribbean culture.

 

Father Goose Performance
2:00pm to 2:30pm and 3:15pm to 3:45pm | All Ages

Join Jamaican-born Father Goose as he sings new life into nursery rhymes with reggae beats and a range of instruments in this big band family dance party.

Holding History
11:00am to 1:00pm | Ages 4+

In honor of our Celebrate the Caribbean Festival, children will celebrate, consider, and engage with the many cultures that make up the Caribbean by holding, touching, and feeling historical artifacts from our collection in a special “Holding History Celebrates the Caribbean” program. Objects are from Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, plus many more! Kids will learn about the history of those objects and cultures through this tactical investigation and by relating these historical artifacts to their own lives.

 

Bobcat Kids Carnival Dance Party
11:30am to 12:00pm and 2:00pm-2:30pm | All Ages

Join Bobcat Kids for a journey to the Caribbean in festive costumes, using body movement and music.
