W.O.R.D. UP! - Words of Real Distinction

      02:30, for 6 and up

Join us for the continuation of our W.O.R.D. UP! reading series celebrating Black History month with a reading of Langston Hughes' poem My People (with photographs by Charles R. Smith, Jr.) by Hollis Barclay (CEO of Hibiscus Health & Wellness Center).

Presenting a unique opportunity for lifelong readers to share through Words of Real Distinction, this month's reading honors James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 - May 22, 1967) - an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. Langston Hughes was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form jazz poetry and is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period when "Harlem" was in vogue.

Made possible in part by the Verizon Foundation, W.O.R.D. UP!, boasts previous readers Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, actor and author Ky-Mani Marley (son of Reggae icon Bob Marley), Reverend Al Sharpton, Congressman Ed Towns, the one-and-only American actress Tina Louise (known for her role as “Ginger” on Gilligan’s Island) and Danny Simmons (abstract expressionist painter, poet, and creator of HBO's groundbreaking Def Poetry).

Due to popular demand we recommend arriving early to W.O.R.D. UP! as seating is on first-come, first-served basis.
