A visiting exhibit that is out of this world!

Inspired by the International Space Station (ISS) and created in collaboration with NASA, Living in Space allows children to experience the challenging and rewarding environment of this historic project. You can experience sleeping, dressing, and working like astronauts, becoming ISS crewmembers for a day.

Learn about space food by selecting foods and pretending to prepare and eat a meal. Discover how astronauts go the bathroom and sleep in space. Find out what astronauts do when they are up there, like as building and maintaining the ISS. In addition to performing simulated science experiments, you can dock the incoming Space Shuttle to the ISS using visual cues, cooperation and communication. Choose items to pack for a trip to space and receive feedback on your choices, taking into account available space and weight, safety of materials, and other factors that astronauts must consider. Find out how astronauts exercise in space, see videos of weightless play aboard the ISS and learn about the effects of living in microgravity. Stories and videos from real ISS crewmembers are also presented.

Living in Space is the first exhibition in the Museum’s Chase Gallery, our new home for visiting exhibitions, generously donated by JPMorgan Chase. The Chase Gallery will continue hosting a rotating schedule of traveling exhibitions from across North America.
