Japan and Nature: Spirit of the Seasons is a 1,000-square-foot exhibition for children ages 5-12 that invites American children to explore how people, and their way of life, are shaped by where they live.

Japan and Nature features engaging activities through four distinct, interactive environments reflecting Japan’s seasons and geographic features. Japan’s unique geography, natural landscape, and human history converge to influence traditional and contemporary Japanese culture in myriad ways.

In this exhibit, collected stories, cultural artifacts, and photographs and videos of real children’s lives illustrate, from a Japanese child’s perspective, how nature is portrayed, observed, transformed, and experienced through commercialized recreation, technology, mass media, educational experiences, traditional arts, ceremonies, and celebrations.

By exploring how their counterparts in Japan celebrate and understand the seasons and their natural environment, American children discover the commonalities and differences they share.
