Global Shoes is a 1,200-square-foot exhibition that incorporates collections objects and a variety of hands-on, feet-in, multi-media activities that let children and their families explore aspects of global cultures within the context of a fantasy shoe store and factory.

The Global Shoes shoe store includes environments where visitors step into the shoes of families in Kiribati, Mongolia, and Iceland to learn about their lives; a collection study and try-on area of world shoes introduces different cultures and places; and a shoe timeline and foot-measuring activity focuses on physical and personal growth. In a specialty shoe discovery and try-on game, children learn about shoes used for various jobs, sports, and performances around the world. In the factory, children can “order” sneaker parts from real shoe suppliers around the world, touch and test different shoe materials, design their own shoes, try different shoemaking processes and much more.

A special component features children’s stories and artwork describing their lives from their shoes’ point of view collected for Global Shoes from 16 countries around the world: Samoa, Qatar, Uganda, Moldova, St. Lucia, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Tanzania, Mexico, and the Netherlands.

GALLERY REQUIREMENTS

1,200 to 1,400 square feet, 9’0” ceiling heights, moderate security, stable temperature and humidity (AAM standards), nine 110-volt grounded outlets

INSTALLATION

Venues are approximately 14 to 15 weeks long (open to the public). Exhibit will be delivered five working days prior to opening. Schedule assumes Saturday openings, with Sunday as last day open. Installation assumes three or four working days for installation crew of four people, plus one day for shakedown and training. There will be seven to nine working days between closing date and delivery to next venue.

SUPPORT MATERIALS

Object-based activity kit and teacher’s guide, interpretive and program materials, sample press releases and media announcements, promotional graphics, photographs and slides, and a complete assembly and maintenance manual.
