Hoi Celebration - The Festival of Color!

Join Brooklyn Children’s Museum in celebration of Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors. Holi is celebrated all over India as the beginning of spring. On this day, people hug and wish each other ‘Happy Holi’. Jam to some music with Ragakids as they sings songs of celebration in English, Bengali, and Hindi!


Saturday, March 11th

Totally Tots Studio: Meet an Artist, Make a Mess
10:00am to 12:00pm : Ages 2.5+

In celebration of Holi create colorful woodblock prints inspired by Indian artist Zarina Hashmi. Activities invite young artists to build and refine their fine motor skills; engage in sensory exploration of materials; and, learn how to share with others in this open art studio. There is no such thing as a bad mess in this space, which is tailored to children five and younger.

 

Brooklyn Block Lab
10:00am to 1:00pm : Ages 2+

In BCM’s second floor Studio, which focuses on art and architecture, visitors of all ages develop their engineering skills as they engage in open block play with large Imagination Playground blocks and table top sized Kapla Planks and Magnitiles, as well as artist James Paulius’ house-shaped wooden blocks and pegs from his installation Sky Village.

 

Guess that Spice Sensory Play
11:00am to 12:30pm : Ages 3+

Smell and see the colorful the spices of Southeast Asia! Can you identify any of the spices while being blindfolded using only the sense of smell? Test it out and learn about the aromas of Southeast Asia.

 

Touch Tank
12:30pm to 1:00pm : All Ages

Meet and touch real, live sea creatures like starfish and sea urchins. 

 

Henna Hands Temporary Tattoo
1:00pm to 3:00pm : Ages 4+  $5 fee paid at the admissions desk

Henna is a traditional art form that has been practiced in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa for hundreds of years. Children and adults are invited to have their hands adorned with temporary henna tattoos.

 

Colorful Confetti Poppers
1:30pm to 3:00pm : Ages 3+

Create a celebratory party popper full of colorful confetti! Pop your popper while jamming out to RagaKids.

 

Sensory Room
2:00pm to 4:45pm : All Ages

In this inclusive space, children of all abilities can explore their senses. The Sensory Room is a welcoming environment full of wonderful equipment and activities to stimulate kids in a variety of ways for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

 

Holi Holiday Performance with RagaKids!
3:00pm to 4:00pm : All ages

Join RagaKids as they sing songs in English, Bengali and Hindi. Led by Brooklyn-based music educators and performers Sameer Gupta (tabla), Trina Basu (violin) and Neel Murgai (sitar), learn about Indian music, instruments, dance.

Learn about and touch live animals from the Museum’s living collection.

Holding History: Exploring Color and Southeast Asia
11:00am to 1:00pm : Ages 5+

How are color pigments made? In celebration of Holi, children touch cultural artifacts from BCM’s collection, and explore scientific specimens that are used for making color pigment. Children will learn about the science behind color pigments, as well as Indian customs, through tactile investigations of objects.

Join a BCM Educator for this interactive story time. 

 

Straw Blown Paintings
2:00pm to 4:00pm : Ages 3+  

Make gorgeous drips and swirling designs by painting with straws. Abandon your paint brush in exchange for a straw and your breath to create colorful tableaux. Take a deep breath and go for it!
