Black History Month Celebration - Mid Winter Recess!

Join us for our annual Black History Month celebration February 19th-24th at Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Over a span of five days of culture and fun, families will learn about influential Black women leaders through story times, dance with SHINE: a family house party at the Museum, and watch screenings of kid-friendly short films focused on Black History Month.


Sunday, February 19th
Totally Tots Studio- Meet the Artist
10:00am to 12:00pm : Ages 2.5+

Each week kids make artwork inspired by artists! This month learn about Mickalene Thomas,  Jean-Michel Basquiat, Horace Pippin, and Kara Walker. Activities invite young artists to build and refine their fine motor skills; engage in sensory exploration of materials, and learn how to share with others in this open art studio. There is no such thing as a bad mess in this space, which is tailored to children five and younger.

 

Brooklyn Block Lab & Studio
10:00am to 1:00pm : Ages 2.5+

In BCM’s new 2nd floor Studio, which focuses on art and architecture, visitors of all ages develop their engineering skills as they engage in open block play with large Imagination Playground blocks and table top sized Kapla Planks and Magnatiles, as well as artist James Paulius’ house-shaped wooden blocks and pegs from his installation Sky Village.

 

Holding History: Touring the Diaspora
11:00am to 1:00pm : Ages 2.5+

Children are invited to hold authentic African American and African cultural heritage artifacts from the Museum’s collection.

From Ancient Egypt, and the West African countries of Ghana, Mali, Guinea, Nigeria, to modern day United States.

 

Touch Tank 
12:30pm to 1:00pm : All ages 

Meet and touch real, live sea creatures like starfish and sea urchins.

 

SHINE: A Family House Party 
1:00pm to 4:30pm : All ages

Brooklyn Children’s Museum is Brooklyn’s favorite house of exploration, discovery, and play, and SHINE is the ultimate house party for all-ages. Join us for an afternoon full of music, art making, and body rocking! SHINE is where you and the super stars in your life can be bright. Story Time at BCM
1:30pm to 2:00pm, 3:00pm to 3:30pm : All ages

Join a BCM Educator for this interactive story time, as we learn about five influential black women leaders  through stories, words and songs. Learn about Rosa Parks, civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.

 

Sensory Room
2:00pm to 4:45pm  : All ages

In this inclusive space, children of all abilities can explore their senses. The Sensory Room is a welcoming environment full of wonderful equipment and activities to stimulate kids in a variety of ways for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

 

Live Animal Adventure
4:15pm to 4:45pm : All ages

Learn about and touch live animals from the Museum’s living collection.


Monday, February 20th
BCM Cinema with  BINO & FINO

Travel to the continent of Africa with BCM! Watch kid friendly screenings of the popular Nigerian cartoon series BINO and FINO, and learn about the importance of Black History Month in the Commons Theater! Parents and teachers worldwide are using the series to educate children about African culture, heritage and more.

 

Story Time at BCM
1:30pm to 2:00pm, 3:00pm to 3:30pm : All ages

Join a BCM Educator for this interactive story time, as we learn about five influential black women leaders through stories, words and songs. Learn about Ruby Bridges, the first child to integrate schools in Louisiana.

Travel to the continent of Africa with BCM! Watch kid friendly screenings of the popular Nigerian cartoon series BINO and FINO, and learn about the importance of Black History Month in the Commons Theater! Parents and teachers worldwide are using the series to educate children about African culture, heritage and more.

 

Story Time at BCM
1:30pm to 2:00pm : All ages  

Join a BCM Educator for this interactive story time, as we learn about five influential black women leaders  through stories, words and songs. Learn about Wilma Rudolph, African American track and field sprinter, who competed in the 100 and 200 meters dash. Rudolph was considered the fastest woman in the world in the 1960s and competed in two Olympic Games, in 1956 and in 1960.
